How to Bet on the World Cup

June 10, 2010

Sports betting fans should be really excited about the upcoming World Cup because even if you don’t follow soccer, there are plenty of opportunities to make big-time money.

First, let’s learn how the betting system works for the games.

The best way to make money at the World Cup is by betting on the money line.  Usually the odds makers don’t know enough about several teams and they always leave a gap open for you to take advantage.

Since the tournament is a group stage first, where two of four teams will qualify to the next round, every game counts, meaning every team will fight for the win.

The best way to bet the money line is to find a game where both teams pay plus.  For example, the opening game where the line is South Africa +170, Draw +225, and Mexico +155.

If you decided to bet this game, it will be a win-win situation for you because you only will have to bet $100 to win on either of those teams.

When there is a big favorite, the way to go is by betting the spread.  For example, in the Argentina vs. Nigeria game, the money line will be: Argentina -235, Draw +335, and Nigeria 600.

Betting Argentina -235 will be insane.  It is better if you take the -1.5 spread and bet them to cover as the money that you would have to bet will be lower and the chances that the South American team will win by more than one goal are high.

So take this advice: when a team is big-time favorite, bet them to cover the spread and when the game is close, bet the money line.

Also, if you are thinking of getting into some World Cup betting action, always look for playmakers that can make a difference in a game. Also take a look at the tournament history and especially look for the team chemistry, which is very important.

If you look back to 2006, Italy was not the favorite, but their chemistry was huge. The same happened with France in 1998 and Argentina in 1986, as neither of those teams were the best overall, but their chemistry lead them to victory.
