Steps to Take if Your Gmail Account Was Hacked

You have a Gmail account and you realize that it has been hacked. Don’t panic. Here are some things that you can do to help to remedy the situation so that it doesn’t happen to you again and so that you can have some peace of mind.

1. Change the Password – The first thing that you should do is to change the account password. Make it completely different from the one that you had previously.
2. Change the Question – The second thing that you should do is to change the security question that is associated with your account. There are some things that you should remember when you are selecting your question:

  • Only you should know the answer to that question and it shouldn’t be easy to guess. Don’t use a pet’s name, the maiden name of your mother, things like that.
  • Don’t make the question associated with the password that you choose. This should be obvious but a lot of people make this mistake to make it easier for them to remember.
  • Make sure that you are able to remember your answer if you need to remember it. A hard answer is good, but don’t make it so hard that you don’t know it. It’s like when you hide something so well that someone else can’t find it, but then you can’t find it, either.

3. Change Other Passwords – The third thing that you should do is to change the other passwords on your other accounts. The reason for this is that a lot of times your passwords are sent to your email. If the person accessed your email, they may have read those passwords. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

These are the three things that you should do if you have discovered that your Gmail account has been hacked. They will help to keep your information safe and secure.
