The Basic Engineered Parts of a Laptop

Laptop computer parts or hardware components are the same as you would find in a desktop computer but are just a smaller size. The laptop parts are designed for low energy consumption and are adaptable for mobile use. Here are some of the parts that you will find in a laptop computer.

  • Motherboard–The motherboards for a laptop computer are very specific on make and model. A laptop may not have any expansion slots due to its small size.  All the functionality is on the motherboard, unlike in desktop computers.
  • Central processing unit–This is known as a CPU. The CPU on a laptop computer has an advanced power-saving feature. They produce less heat but are not as powerful. Some laptop CPU’s are replaceable and some are not.
  • Memory (RAM)–The memory module is about half the size of a desktop. You may be able to access them from the bottom for easy upgrading, or they are placed in areas that are not intended for user replacement. Most midrange laptops are factory equipped with 3-4 GB RAM and notebooks usually have 1GB RAM.
  • Expansion Cards–These are often present on laptops to let you add and remove functionality, even while the laptop is on.
  • Power Supply–Most are powered by an internal rechargeable battery. They are charged using an external power supply. The power supply can charge the laptop and the battery together. When the battery is fully charged, the laptop runs on AC power.
  • Batteries–Some laptops use lithium ion batteries and others use lithium polymer technology. Typical battery life for light-duty use is two to five hours. It may only be an hour with power-intensive tasks.
  • Removable media drives–This is a DVD/CD reader/writer. It is universal on full size laptops, common on thin-and-light laptops, uncommon on subnotebooks, and unknown on netbooks.
  • Ports–Most laptops have several USB ports. They are external monitor ports, a mini-display port, an audio in/out, and Ethernet network port.
